Lingfield Park Racecourse in Surrey is the only venue in Great Britain that stages all three codes of horse racing: flat turf, flat all-weather, and National Hunt racing. It hosts around 90 fixtures each year.

The all‑weather track dominates the modern programme: a left‑handed, sweeping Polytrack circuit that favours horses who travel smoothly and can quicken off a steady rhythm. Because the bends are generous and the surface is consistent, races often unfold at a controlled tempo before turning into a sprint in the straight, and the track tends to reward balance and tactical speed rather than raw stamina. Evening fixtures on the all‑weather give the place a busy, almost metropolitan feel, and the reliability of the surface means the course races through weather that would stop most turf venues.

Just inside that circuit sits the turf course, which has a completely different character. It's left‑handed, undulating and more demanding, with a downhill run into the straight and a stiff climb to the line that can expose anything that doesn't stay. The winter turf season is best known for the trials for the Derby and Oaks, which give the track a brief but important role in the early part of the Flat year. Those trials often reveal horses who handle cut in the ground and can cope with the track’s changes of gradient, and they give Lingfield a prestige that belies its relatively modest size.

The setting adds another layer of contrast. The course sits in a wooded valley on the edge of the Surrey countryside, so even on busy racedays it feels enclosed and slightly secluded. The grandstand looks out across both tracks, giving spectators a clear view of the action, and the mix of all‑weather and turf fixtures keeps the place active almost year‑round. That blend of reliability, variety and a surprisingly scenic backdrop is what gives Lingfield its particular charm.
