 Stables: 1½ miles west of Knutsford between A556 and M6 (use Exit 19). WA16 0HB

 Tabley is one of the most recognisable and long‑established point‑to‑point courses in the North West, set in the parkland of the Tabley Estate near Knutsford. It has a very particular feel: open, slightly rolling Cheshire farmland with the big house overlooking the course from across the park. Meetings always feel spacious and relaxed, with plenty of room for spectators and a layout that’s easy to follow from almost anywhere on the rail.

The track is left‑handed and essentially a broad oval on gently undulating ground. Nothing is extreme, but the rises and falls are enough to shape the rhythm of a race. Horses are rarely on perfectly level ground, and that makes balance and stamina matter more than pure cruising speed. The back straight has a steady, energy‑sapping climb that can expose anything racing too freely, while the turn into the home straight opens out into a long, fair run‑in where sustained pace counts.

The fences are solid, well‑built timber, always smartly presented and spaced in a pattern that encourages rhythm rather than frantic adjustment. Horses that jump economically tend to thrive because the approaches often feel slightly on the rise, and anything that wastes energy at the fences can lose momentum quickly. Front‑runners can do well if they settle early, but the long straight gives hold‑up horses a chance provided they travel kindly and jump fluently.

The atmosphere is one of Tabley’s strengths. Meetings feel friendly and rural, with Cheshire farming families, hunt supporters, and regular North West point‑to‑point followers spread along the rails. On bright spring days the place feels open and calm; on breezier ones the parkland can be exposed, with the wind rolling across the fields and adding an extra test of stamina. It’s a venue that rewards neat jumping, steady travelling, and horses that can cope with a rhythm shaped by gentle undulations and long, honest straights.
