Askham Bryan’s point‑to‑point course sits just west of York, laid out on farmland close to the agricultural college, and it has always had the feel of a proper countryside meeting: open fields, long views, and a layout that rewards rhythm rather than brute pace. The course is left‑handed and fairly flat, with only gentle undulations, so horses can travel comfortably without being asked to cope with anything too testing. The fences are straightforward and well‑built, typical Yorkshire timber, and they tend to come up quickly enough to keep riders honest without ever feeling unfair.

The track shape is essentially a broad oval with long, sweeping bends. Because the ground is generally good, even in early spring, races often develop into steady, rolling gallops where jumping fluency matters more than raw stamina. Front‑runners can do well here because there’s plenty of space to get into a rhythm, but the long home straight also gives hold‑up horses a chance if they travel kindly and jump cleanly. The run‑in is generous, allowing riders to build momentum rather than relying on a short burst.
