Windsor Racecourse has a character all of its own, shaped by the fact it sits on an island in a broad loop of the Thames. The setting gives it a relaxed, almost holiday feel, with boats moored along the riverbank and the course lying low and flat against the water. On warm summer evenings, when most of its fixtures take place, it feels more like a social event with racing woven through it than a conventional racecourse.

The track is left‑handed and famously figure‑of‑eight in layout, something almost unique in Britain. Because of that shape, races can involve long, sweeping bends in both directions, and balance matters as much as speed. The surface is generally quick‑draining, and Windsor tends to race on the faster side unless there has been sustained rain. The straight five furlongs is sharp and favours horses with early pace, while longer distances can become tactical because riders have to judge when to commit on the bends.

Windsor is known for its Monday evening meetings from spring to early autumn, which draw big crowds from London and the Thames Valley. The atmosphere is informal and lively, and the course leans into that identity. It also stages some useful juvenile races, often attracting well‑bred two‑year‑olds from major yards looking for experience on a fair, uncomplicated surface.

Despite the relaxed vibe, Windsor has a long history, with racing recorded there since the 1860s. Its riverside location and unusual layout make it instantly recognisable, and trainers often send horses that appreciate a turning, pace‑friendly track.

While the track abandoned regular jump racing in December 1998 to focus almost entirely on Flat racing, it officially returned to the venue in December 2024 after a 26-year absence.

Windsor now operates a dual-purpose schedule, hosting its famous Flat racing fixtures from April to October and a small program of National Hunt jump racing fixtures during the winter months.

When jumps originally returned in late 2024, they were initially run on a newly configured left-handed oval circuit. However, ahead of the winter season, the course reverted to its traditional, unique figure-of-eight layout following feedback from the BHA and top trainers. (Windsor and Fontwell Park are the only two figure-of-eight racecourses in the UK). Windsor co-hosts the Berkshire Winter Million Racing Festival in January alongside its neighbouring track, Ascot, which features high-profile, big-prize jump racing.
