Sandown Park is a right‑handed, galloping track in Esher with a slightly elevated, self‑contained feel, the grandstands sitting above the course so the whole place feels built for big occasions. The Flat course has a steady climb to the line that makes races more demanding than they first appear, and the straight five furlongs is one of the stiffest sprints in the country. Horses that travel strongly but don't quite see it out often get found out in the last hundred yards.

The jumps track is even more distinctive. The back straight contains the famous Railway Fences, three in quick succession that punish anything that isn't balanced or fluent. The Pond Fence comes soon after, and then the long, rising home straight stretches stamina and jumping accuracy at the same time. Sandown’s chases tend to produce honest, decisive results because the track exposes any weakness.

It is a venue associated with major races on both codes. On the Flat it stages the Eclipse, the Brigadier Gerard and the Henry II Stakes, while over jumps it is home to the Tingle Creek, the Scilly Isles and the end‑of‑season bet365 meeting. Despite being close to London, the course feels green and open, and on clear days the skyline is visible from the stands.
