Brighton Racecourse lies on Whitehawk Hill, east of the city and high above the sea, giving it one of the most dramatic settings in British racing. The course is a left‑handed, horseshoe‑shaped track of about a mile and a half, with no complete circuit — races start on the far side and finish in front of the stands after a long, undulating run‑in. The ground rises and falls throughout, and the final climb to the line is stiff enough to expose anything short of full stamina. Because of its shape, balance and agility matter as much as speed, and front‑runners often do well if they handle the turns.

Racing at Brighton dates back to the early eighteenth century, though the modern course was laid out in the 1780s and became fashionable in the Regency period when the Prince of Wales brought his court to the town. It has always had a seaside character: breezy, informal, and popular with holiday crowds. The track hosts around twenty fixtures a year from April to October, with the August Festival as its highlight. The course's exposed position means the going can change quickly, and the view from the stands stretches across the Channel on clear days.
