 Hereford is a right‑handed, almost rectangular National Hunt track of about a mile and three furlongs, with a long run‑in and generally fair, galloping layout. The bends are sharpest at the home turn, which falls away slightly, while the others are more forgiving. Ground can be testing in winter, and the compact shape gives excellent viewing.

Racing here goes back to 1771, when flat races were held on the outskirts of the city; hurdles arrived in 1840 and the course evolved into a jumps venue. It closed during both World Wars, reopened in 1946 with investment and a new lease, and became a busy mid‑century track, especially after fixtures were reallocated from Stockton in the early 1970s, leading to a record 219 runners in a single day in 1975.

The course was modernised in the 1960s, then controversially closed in 2012 when a new lease could not be agreed. It reopened in 2016 under Arena Racing Company, drawing around 5,000 people to the revival meeting and restoring regular jump racing to the city. Since then it has staged a steady programme of fixtures and re‑established itself as a friendly, practical venue close to the Welsh border.
