Fakenham is a small, tight, left‑handed National Hunt course in north Norfolk, barely a mile round and almost square in shape, which makes it a specialist’s track where neat jumping and accurate cornering matter more than long‑striding galloping. The steeplechase course sits outside the hurdles track and has six fences per circuit, with the open ditch as the penultimate obstacle. It is also used by the West Norfolk Hunt for point‑to‑points.

Racing here began in 1905 after the West Norfolk Hunt moved its Easter Monday meeting from East Winch to Fakenham's lighter, more suitable ground. That first fixture drew 37 runners and quickly proved the move was popular. For decades it staged only the Easter meeting, with hurdles introduced in 1926, and a second fixture added in 1947 after the Second World War. The first grandstand went up in 1953, and the formation of Fakenham Racecourse Ltd in 1965 secured Levy Board support and helped the course survive a period when many small tracks closed.

Royal patronage has been a constant thread, beginning at East Winch with the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), continuing through Queen Elizabeth II, and now held by King Charles III. The most significant modern upgrade was the £1 million Prince of Wales Stand, opened in 2002 by the then Prince of Wales, which transformed the facilities and signalled long‑term commitment to the venue.

Despite its modest size, Fakenham remains the only jumps racecourse in East Anglia, giving it a regional importance that outweighs its scale. Horses familiar with the track often run well repeatedly, and that pattern is a recognised feature of racing and betting here.
